Pre-Surgical Instructions for IV Sedation

FASTING: Take only your prescribed medications prior to sedation. We ask that you NOT eat for six hours. If your surgery is in the afternoon, wake up early and have a hearty breakfast. Please stay hydrated. You may have a small amount of water two hours prior to your surgery. No more than one cup-8 ozs. (NO MILK or JUICE). Plan to take the remainder of the day off so you can go home and rest.

DRESS: Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes with short sleeves. Remove earrings, watches, jewelry, and contact lenses before your appointment.

TRANSPORTATION: You will need a responsible adult to bring you to and from your appointment. This individual will be responsible for driving you home and your well-being once you leave. Please plan to have a responsible individual stay with you for at least 3 hours after your procedure. You should NOT attempt to drive for 24 hours following surgery.

DIET: Be prepared to drink nothing but cold substances the rest of the day following surgery, e.g. shakes, fruit juices, & pudding. No carbonated or alcoholic beverages, no smoking, and no straws. The next two days, be prepared for a diet of soft foods, warm or cold-bread, soup, pasta, yogurt, cottage cheese, and ice cream.

LADIES: Please remove nail polish or artificial nail from right index (pointer) finger for monitoring of your vital signs during surgery. Please refrain from using makeup around your mouth on the day of surgery. Prior to surgery, please remove lipstick.

INFORM US of any changes in your medical status and/or new medication prior to your appointment.

After you leave the office it is important that you DO NOT:
Drive a motor vehicle or operate machinery, stay at home by yourself, make important decisions, or go to work, navigate stairs, streets, or parking lots. The medications that are given will alter your ability to make rational decisions. affect, judgment and motor skills.

Failure to follow these instructions could result in postponement of your surgery and a IV setup fee will be added to your account. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us.
